Ethnic Cleansing in Kenya

I do not understand why we sacrifice so many lives and so much money to reduce the ethnic violence in some countries (Iraq), but not others (Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Sudan).

BBC News article on US response to violence in Kenya.

"She [US Assistant Secretary of State] urged President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga to focus on mediation efforts to end the crisis." Quite different than our actions in Iraq of late.

I pray that the violence in Kenya is over as quickly as possible.

Australia Apology to Aborigines

Hi!

I heard about this public apology issue on the radio and immediately reflected on the treatment of native people of America and African slaves brought this country. To what extent has our government apologized/acknowledged past atrocities? How has this been received? Should oppressed groups be compensated for their losses? Is this possible?

Racial Incidents on Campus

Hey, Blake posted something! Now I feel like I want to also. :)

I came across this listing of racially based incidents on college campuses a few months ago, and I was really struck that so many of these had occurred with little to no media attention. Additionally, when contrasted with how much (negative) coverage the University of Delaware received about their residence life program promoting social justice, it really made me think about how the media will skewer student affairs professionals who are trying to do good (with a few missteps) rather than critically look at what frightening things are happening, and why.

Why do you think that the media (and student affairs, for that matter) is seeming to sidestep this issue?

This is a similar list from 2006...

Bias Incidents - Nation-wide

Hi Folks,

In the fall some of the professional staff in the Res.Ed. department got together to discuss the issue of bias incidents on a national level. This discussion came in the wake of the Jena controversy and the noose incident at Columbia University. We selected the following articles (thank you to Katrina Lee) to discuss incidents all around the country. Take a look at any or all of these brief articles if you did not attend the session or if you are interested in current social justice issues.

NY Times on Jena Six
Swastika Crimes in Manhattan
Racial Violence in Miami
"Copy-cat" Noose Incidents
Editorial on Noose Incidents
What is an "appropriate" reaction?
i like unicorns. but like social justice... they only appear in my dreams.
